A bright green notice was posted at the front of the bus when I boarded this morning. Apparently my route, the 801 EXPRESS, will be discontinued on December 10th to usher in FrontRunner commuter rail service. I was a little caught off guard by the announcement, so I decided to do some research.
The FrontRunner South line will extend to Provo with the final stop located at 700 S University Avenue. Here's the site plan for the new Provo station as well as a map of the new line:
FrontRunner's two-level passenger trains will run every 30 minutes from 4:00am to 1:30am Monday through Friday and from 6:00am to 1:30am on Saturday. With all six stops along the way and with the trains travelling at speeds of up to 79 miles per hour, the trip from Provo to Salt Lake is expected to take about an hour—not bad when you consider the time it takes to travel the same route by car or bus during rush hour traffic. My typical commute may end up taking longer, however, since I will have to hop on TRAX to get to work once FrontRunner drops me off at the intermodal hub.
Overall, I'm actually pretty of excited about the prospect of making my morning and afternoon commute by train. I'll report on the experience—and whether I am still excited about it at that point—in December.
