A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Better than The Kite Runner, and that’s saying a lot. Reading this book was a revelatory experience. Never before had I imagined the type of repressive treatment of women A Thousand Splendid Suns exposes. Khaled Hosseini’s second novel will leave you cringing at times (and possibly crying at others) as it tells the story of an unexpected bond between two Afghan women, Mariam and Laila, and their struggle to endure the cruelties of day-to-day life in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan. Their story is one of love and hope that blossoms from the bleakest of circumstances, and one I highly recommend.
